NDA stands for National Defence Academy, the training institute for the cadets of all the 3 defence services of India(Army, Airforce and Navy). National Defence Academy(NDA) Exam is conducted twice a year i.e (NDA-I and NDA-II) by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The first notification is issued around December to January and the second notification is issued around June.
The first entrance exam is conducted around April and the second around September.
For the upcoming year, the NDA Exam will be conducted for the 151st course and for the 113th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC).

NDA Exam 2023 Notification
NDA notification 2023 pdf for NDA-I Exam has been released by the UPSC at its official website on 21 December 2022 announcing vacancies for boys and girls to be recruited in 2023 for National Defence Academy(NDA) and Naval Academy. The NDA exam is conducted by UPSC for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the Indian Defence Forces. This exam is a gateway to joining the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force as an officer.
What is the Eligibility Criteria to apply for NDA Exam?

The complete details of Eligibility Criteria such as Nationality, Educational Qualification,Age Limit, Nationality and Physical Standards are mentioned below.
Nationality
The candidates must be unmarried male/female and should be:
- A Citizen of India, or
- A Subject of Bhutan, or
- A Subject of Nepal, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st of January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Note: Provided that a candidate belonging to categories(ii) (iii) & (iv) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of eligibility will not however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.
NDA Age Limit, Sex and Martial Status:
Only unmarried male/female candidates between the age group of 16 1/2 to 19 1/2 can join NDA.
NDA Educational Qualifications:
For Army Wing of National Defence Academy(NDA):
- 12th pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination by a State Education Board or a University.
For Air Force & Navy Wing of National Defence Academy(NDA) and for 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at Indian Naval Academy:
- 12th pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
Note: Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent examination can also apply for UPSC NDA examination.
NDA Physical/Medical Standards:
- Candidates must be physically and mentally fit according to prescribed physical standards/guidelines given in NDA Notification.
- To be deemed ‘Medically Fit’ a candidate must be in a good physical and mental health and free from any disease/syndrome/disability likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties in any terrain, climate, seasons including sea and air, in remote areas, in austere conditions with no medical aid.
- Candidate also should be free of medical conditions which require frequent visit to medical facilities and use of any aid/drugs.
- The candidates should fulfill the following physical standards criteria to appear for National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Exam:
- Running : 2.4 kms in 15 mins
- Skipping
- Push-ups & sit-ups: Minimum 20 each
- Chin-ups: Minimum 08
- Rope Climbing: 3.4 meters

A candidate who has resigned or withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the training academies of Armed Forces is not eligible to apply.
Salary of officers selected through NDA Exam:
Officers qualifying the NDA Exam will be selected as cadets. NDA salary and other allowances are mentioned in the official notification. During the training period cadets will receive a fixed amount of stipend. After the completion of training they will became officers and NDA Officers starting basic salary(Basic Pay)is fixed at pay matrix ₹56,000/- per month at Level 10. The salary will increase with promotion and increasing in rank. Along with the basic pay officers will get other allowances.

Apart from the basic salary officers are offered various allowances such as Uniform Allowance, Compensatory Modified Field Area Allowance, Dearness Allowance and Transportation Allowance. Both male and female candidates will be rewarded with same salary and allowances.
Flying Officers will get separate flying allowances.
How to apply for NDA Exam?
- Candidates are required to apply Online by using the website upsconline.nic.in.
- It is essential for the applicant to register himself/herself first at One Time Registration (OTR) platform, available on the Commission’s website, and then proceed for filling up the online application for the examination. OTR has to be registered only once in life time. This can be done anytime throughout the year.
- If the candidate is already registered he/she can directly fill the application.
- Registration process comprises of two parts (Part-I & Part-II)
- Part-I include basic registration and other details.
- Part-II includes uploads of scanned photographs, signature, fee payment etc.
- Choose the preferred exam centres while filling the application form.
- Candidates must fill the personal details carefully.
- Candidates can also withdraw application.
- Scanned documents should be uploaded in specific format.
- Take Print out of application form after final submission.
What is the Application Fee to apply for NDA Exam?
- ₹100/- for General and OBC candidates.
- Categories of SC/ST and son/daughters of JCOs, NCOs and ORs are exempted to pay exam fee.
What is the Selection Process of NDA Exam?
NDA Examination will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission 2 times a year. The selection process for defence jobs through NDA Exam will be conducted in two stages:
- Writing Examination
- Personality and Interview Test(SSB)
A candidate who qualifies in a written examination will be called for a personality test which will be conducted to check the intelligence and personality. The candidates have to clear both stages to get their names on the merit list. The merit list/final result will be generated by UPSC with the cumulative score of the Written Exam and the SSB will be considered for final selection.

NDA SSB Interview
The SSB Interview will be conducted for assessing the Intelligence and Personality of the candidate. The candidates who have qualified the written exam have to appear in two stage interview process. The merit list will be prepared on the basis of candidate’s performance in both written examination and interview round.

How to download NDA Admit Card?
UPSC will release the NDA Admit card on its official website www.UPSC.gov.in. The candidates who are going to register for the exam can download the admit card using their registration number and password generated at the time of application from the above mentioned website. The process to download Admit Card is discussed in the following steps:
- Visit official website of Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) at www.UPSC.gov.in
- Click on home.
- Click on active examinations
- Now click on “National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination(I) or (II) ,2023.
- Scroll down to look for “e-Admit”, click on “Click Here”.
- An instruction pdf will open, take print out of the pdf it is mandatory.
- Now click on either ‘By Registration Numbers’ or ‘By Roll Number’.
- Enter the details required, the captcha and click on ‘Submit’.
- Your NDA &NA Admit card appears on the screen, download and take print out of the same.
When NDA Exam Answer Key will be released?
The Answer Key for the NDA Exam will be released officially after the conduction of the written exam. First the commission will issue a provisional answer key to which candidates can submit their objections. After assessment of the provisional answer key objections, the final answer key will be released.
When do NDA Exam Result will release?

The result of the written exam will release around a month later after the exam with names of the candidates shortlisted for the SSB Interview. The final merit list of candidates selected for admission to Army, Air Force and Navy wings of NDA & NA after the SSB Interview process.
