The UPSC EPFO 2026 recruitment cycle has generated some confusion among aspirants, largely because it departs from the pattern followed in recent years. This guide breaks down exactly what is being recruited for in 2026, who is eligible, the exam pattern, syllabus, and how to prepare.
Where Things Stand Right Now
Why This Is an APFC-Only Recruitment Cycle
In recent years, UPSC has typically issued a combined notification covering both Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer (EO/AO) and Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) posts, with a single common examination for both. Based on that pattern, many aspirants expected the 2026 cycle to follow suit.
That did not happen. According to an RTI response, EPFO's original requisition to UPSC for this cycle stood at 391 vacancies — 311 for EO/AO and 80 for APFC. On 8 June 2026, EPFO formally withdrew its requisition for the 311 EO/AO vacancies, leaving only the 80-post APFC requisition in place. As a result, the notification released in August 2026 covers APFC recruitment exclusively.

Vacancy Breakdown
| Category | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| UR | 29 |
| EWS | 08 |
| OBC | 18 |
| SC | 15 |
| ST | 10 |
| Total | 80 |
Of the total, 3 vacancies are reserved horizontally for PwBD candidates.
With only 80 posts on offer, the vacancy pool is considerably smaller than most other central government recruitment exams, which typically results in higher competition per seat.

Eligibility Self-Check
Role and Responsibilities of an APFC
The Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner is a Group ‘A’ officer-level position within EPFO, involving administrative, financial, and enforcement-related functions. Core responsibilities include:
- Enforcement of EPF-related statutory provisions
- Recovery of dues from defaulting establishments
- Accounts management and pension-related settlements
- Legal, administrative, and cash-management functions
- Maintenance of statutory records and MIS reporting
Salary Structure
The APFC post carries Pay Level 10 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, placing it among the standard entry-level Group ‘A’ pay bands in the central government. In addition to basic pay, officers are entitled to standard allowances such as Dearness Allowance and House Rent Allowance, which vary by posting location and change periodically with DA revisions.
Selection Process
The selection process consists of two stages.
Stage 1: Recruitment Test (RT)
- Offline, pen-and-paper mode
- Objective multiple-choice questions, all carrying equal marks
- Duration: 2 hours
- Bilingual: English and Hindi
- Negative marking: one-third (0.33) of the marks allotted to a question is deducted for each incorrect answer
Stage 2: Interview
Candidates who qualify the Recruitment Test are called for an interview. The minimum qualifying marks (out of 100) are:
| Category | Minimum Marks |
|---|---|
| UR/EWS | 50 |
| OBC | 45 |
| SC/ST/PwBD | 40 |
Final Merit: The final selection is based on a combined score with 75% weightage to the Recruitment Test and 25% weightage to the Interview.
Syllabus
According to Appendix-I of the official notification, the Recruitment Test covers the following broad areas:
- General English
- Indian Culture, Heritage, and Freedom Movements
- Developmental Issues and Present Trends in the Indian Economy
- Governance and the Constitution of India
- General Science and Basic Computer Applications
- Elementary Mathematics, Statistics, and General Mental Ability
- Industrial Relations, Labour Codes, and Social Security in India
- Principles of Accountancy, Auditing, and Insurance
- Current Events of National and International Importance
Given that this is a recruitment specifically for EPFO, sections on Industrial Relations, Labour Codes, and Social Security carry disproportionate importance compared to general competitive exams, and deserve early and thorough attention.

Exam Centres

Preparation Strategy
A structured, 16-week preparation timeline works well for most candidates:
| Weeks | Focus Area |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | Labour Laws, Social Security, Polity and Governance |
| 5–8 | Economy, Accountancy and Auditing fundamentals, General Science |
| 9–11 | Elementary Mathematics, Reasoning, and English practice |
| 12–14 | Current Affairs consolidation and previous year question analysis |
| 15–16 | Full-length mock tests and revision, with attention to negative-marking strategy |
Candidates should adjust the time allocation based on individual strengths and weaknesses rather than following this schedule rigidly.
